The International Grid-Connected Renewable Energy Policy Forum was held in Mexico City from February 1-3 2006. The forum was on behalf of the Energy Ministry of Mexico, the Global Environment Facility, The World Bank, and the Energy Sector Management Assistance Programme (ESMAP), and organized in association with the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
Today, renewable energy is the fastest growing of all energy technologies worldwide. These technologies offer enormous benefits as they utilize locally available resources, are environmentally beneficial, enhance energy security, and create domestic job and income opportunities. Experience from developed countries has demonstrated that supportive policy frameworks have been critical to mobilize billions of dollars in financing and encourage technology and market advancement. The developing world has yet to reap the full benefits of renewable energy.
The goal of the Forum was to facilitate increased use of on-grid renewable energy in the developing world. It provided a platform for policymakers, regulators, investors, financiers, industry, and utilities to share experiences, exchange information, and trade lessons learned in grid-connected renewable energy policy formulation and adoption. Country representatives and other participants had the opportunity to discuss on-going and planned activities, and explored opportunities for collaboration.
In achieving the Forum's goals, we successfully brought together over 300 participants, among them policymakers, regulators, academics, investors, financiers, industry, and utilities responsible for power sector and RE development from over 40 countries.
